One aspect of operating your own business that many people fail to cover is having some policies in place. You may think that one of the reasons you have your own business is so you won't be confined in such a way. However, you need to have them so that every customer is treated the same and has a clear understanding of what to expect.
This is especially important when you have other people working for you. They can't be basing their decisions that day on what mood they happen to be in. You can formulate your policies to fit the business you have. Think about jobs you have had in the past. What things about them worked well? What policies left the employees or the customers upset about the results? By thinking in such terms you can come up with a handful of good ones to properly structure your business the way you want it to run.
