Implementing Software Into the History Classroom

History software can be very beneficial to the social studies teacher. Often, children view this particular aspect of the social studies subject as not relevant to them, because their thinking is driven by what is happening around them right now. Engaging educational history software is one way to help bring to life the events of the past in a new way so that students are interacting more actively with the subject matter.

The key to incorporating history software into the classroom is doing so in such a way that it complements what you are teaching rather than becoming the entire focus of the curriculum. To do this, first choose the programming carefully. You want something that is interactive and that addresses the topic that you are already covering. Perhaps you can give the students a worksheet or group project to work on, and then pull aside one or two students at a time to play the program.

You can also use groups to make the most of your computer time. Assign three or four students to work together on solving a problem using the software. Encourage teamwork skills so that each member of their group is given a chance to do the typing and clicking.

History software can be very valuable as a tool in the social studies classroom. Use it as a supplement to your teaching to get kids involved and interacting with the information you are presenting.
